When an Emergency Happens -- What to do

Performed correctly, CPR can more than double a person’s chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.

To maximize the effectiveness of your CPR-Ezy kit, we have set out recommended steps for you to follow.

  1. In a cardiac emergency – Phone an ambulance and then contact your neighbors and friends FIRST to assist you to perform CPR on the person suffering cardiac arrest. Brain damage happens to a CPR victim after only 4 minutes of unconsciousness, so proceed rapidly, carefully, and decisively. When friends, neighbors or bystanders arrive, take turns using the CPR-Ezy chest compression pad and alternate every 4 minutes or whenever you become tired. Keep applying CPR until emergency services arrive.
  2. Check for patient’s breathing every two minutes. Lay persons are no longer expected to check for a pulse but medical professionals are.
  3. If the patient regains a normal breathing, research shows keeping the patient cool is best. In fact, the cooler the better.
  4. Vomiting is the most frequently encountered complication of CPR. If the victim starts to vomit, turn the head to the side and try to sweep out or wipe off the vomit. Continue with CPR.

NOTE: The spread of infection from the victim to the rescuer is exceedingly rare. Most cardiac arrests occur in people's homes - relatives or friends will be the ones needing to do CPR. Even CPR performed on strangers has an exceedingly rare risk of infection. There is NO documentation of HIV or AIDS ever being transmitted via CPR.

Maintaining regular chest compression at the correct force and rate can keep a person alive for many minutes, until medical help arrives.

  • Keep CPR-Ezy in a handy place in your home.
  • Remember to take CPR-Ezy with you when you go away for holidays – put it in your car or caravan.
  • Check the battery in your CPR-Ezy pad regularly. Change the battery every 12 months to ensure correct operation.
  • Undergo CPR refresher training every 1-2 years. It is important to maintain your knowledge and skills at performing really effective CPR in an emergency. Did you know that the guidelines changed late last year?

CPR-Ezy was designed by a medical doctor to assist you to perform more effective CPR in an emergency. Effectiveness is better than efficiency.

Special note about drowning victims:

The Heimlich Maneuver for DROWNING

While there is ongoing debate on exactly when to do the Heimlich Maneuver for drowning victims, it is recommended when a victim doesn’t respond to CPR.

VICTIM LYING ON GROUND

Place victim on back. Turn face to one side to allow water to drain from mouth. Facing victim, kneel astride victim's hips. With one of your hands on top of the other, place the heel of your bottom hand on the upper abdomen below the rib cage and above the navel. Use your body weight to press into the victim's upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Repeat until water no longer flows from the mouth.

STANDING IN A POOL OR SHALLOW WATER
(Bouyancy of the Water Lightens Victims' Weight)Standing in pool

Stand behind the victim and wrap your arms around victim's waist. Make a fist and place the thumb side of your fist against the victim's upper abdomen, below the rib cage and above the navel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into the victim's upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Do not squeeze the ribcage; confine the force of the thrust to your hands. Repeat until water no longer flows from the mouth.

The Victim should see a physician immediately after rescue.
